Brechin Vics Latest News
01/03/10
Brechin Vics had a very youthful team out in their friendly with Forfar West End with no fewer than 9 out of the squad of 14 aged twenty or under. Vics gave a good account of themselves despite losing 4 -1 to a top Premier League side. Forfar took the lead early in the game only for Vics Hart to equalise on 30 mins with a good strike from 20 yards. The Forfar side took the lead again midway through the second half and added a couple of goals in the last 15 mins to complete the scoring. Vics do not have a fixture this Saturday although Manager Lawson will be hoping to arrange a friendly to keep the players ticking over. Vics do have a friendly on Monday evening (8th March) when Highland League outfit Cove Rangers will be visiting Victoria Park. Kick off 7.30pm

New Signings
New manager Derek Lawson hasn't taken long to add to his playing staff with the addition of two new signings. Kris McWalter is a promising young player who has had junior experience previously with Arbroath Vics. Kris is a midfielder and should be a good acquisition to the squad. The other signing is the exerienced striker Bobby Bell. Bobby has vast experience at junior level having played with both ASC and Arbroath Vics. Both players are available to make their debuts on Saturday.
Vics have also lost the services of Lud Metelski who as a result of being relocated through his job has had to find a club nearer his home. The club wishes him well for the future

East Region League
East Craigie 1 Brechin Vics 2
Vics had a deserved victory away to East Craigie coming back from a goal down at half time to totally dominate the second half. This gave new Manager Derek Lawson the ideal start to his Vics career. Derek shuffled the pack and started with a new formation. Once Vics settled into the new formation there looked to be only one winner. It however took two second half goals to seal victory, the first came from Chris Simpson from 4 yards with the second a great free kick by David Easton from 25 yards. Vics are on cup duty next week when they are again in Dundee when they meet Downfield in The Redwood Leisure Cup. Kick off is 2.00pm

Management Team Resign
Brechin Vics received a major shock when Manager Chris SImpson and Assistant Manager Alan Millar resigned from their posts. Both Chris and Alan intimated that the pressures of combining football management, work and family commitments were proving too much. Whilst both confirmed that it was not an easy decision they felt that this was the best way forward for themselves and the Club. The Committee stunned by the decision fully respect their reasons and are grateful for the efforts that they have put into improving the professionalisim of the club. Results didn't quite match expectations but the improvement is their for all too see. The Committee wish them both well for the future.
Vics have appointed senior player Derek Lawson to take charge of all team matters. Clive Massie is to retain his position of player coach. Derek has only recently returned from Australia where he has been coaching and playing football. Derek is very much looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead and will be looking to add to the squad and coaching staff in the near future.
Derek's first game in charge is on Saturday when Vics travel to face East Craigie in a League game. kick off 2.00pm

Dundee Violet 2 Brechin Vics 0
Although Vics lost on Saturday this was a much better performance by the whole team and if they had taken their first half chances then who knows what the outcome may have been. Violet were the beneficiaries of a controversial penalty kick just before half time after their striker appeared to slip under the challenge of Ross. Vics however can take a lot from the game as they competed well against a good Violet side who sit 2nd top of the league. Vics are on their travels on Saturday 17th October when they meet Downfield in the GA Engineering Cup. Kick off is 2.30pm

North League
Brechin Vics 0 - 0 North End
The Vics drew a blank against North End at a windy Victoria Park this afternoon. With many games in the region being cancelled due to strong winds, it was inevitable that the wind was going to spoil what was potentially an attractive league game. Both teams had good chances to win the game and North End were reduced to ten men late into the second half when Chris Simpson was hauled down with only the keeper to beat.
The match report will be available shortly.

Vics team up with Lucozade
Instead of the usual wednesdays night training session, the Vics were lucky enough to be put through their paces by the Sports Science team from Lucozade. The players performed a number of fitness tests working on speed and agility with and without a ball. These tests are normally used by premiership teams to record players fitness components so the Vics would like to thank Jaymie Mart for taking the time to come up and deliver the session, aswell as Ewan Cairney for organising the event. Manager Chris Simpson commented 'the lads really enjoyed themselves tonight and we all found the testing enjoyable and also it was interesting to compare scores to see who really was the quickest in the team'.

East of Scotland Cup 1st Round
East Craigie 4 - Brechin Vics 1
Vics poor run of results continued on Saturday with another below par performance. After a good start to the season Vics appeared to have lost confidence and belief in their ability. The only highlight was a goal from striker Easton who's shot from 20 yards found the corner of the net. Only hard work from everyone will turn results around. Vics are at home on Saturday 3rd October when Dundee North End are visitors to Victoria Park. Kick off is 2.30pm

Kirrie Thistle 2 Brechin Vics 1
Vics had another disappointing result and performance on Saturday although they could have come away with a share of the points but for a late goal from Kirrie. Vics made a number of changes from last weeks team but this never had the desired affect and although they were hard to break down Vics never created much in the way of chances. The only bright note was a 30 yard strike from Ross which deceived the keeper and ended up in the back off the net. Vics have a break from league duty on Saturday 26th September when they travel to meet Dundee East Craigie in the East of Scotland Cup 1st round. Kick off is 2.30pm

Brechin Vics 2 Coupar Angus 3
This was a very poor performance by Vics as they failed to match their more eager opponents. Vics normal passing game didn't happen until the last half hour and by this time they were 3 goals behind. They dominated the end of the match and scored two good goals the first a 25 yard volley by Fenwick and the second a headed goal from Easton, but it was a case of too little too late. Lets hope this was a one off and they get back on track when they travel to meet Kirrie Thistle on Saturday 19th Sept. Kick off is 2.30pm

North League
Brechin Vics 2 Arbroth Vics 2
Brechin had a well deserved draw against near neighbours Arbroath. Over the 90 minutes Brechin's good outfield play probably should have earned them the 3 pts but they failed to take the chances that they had created. The team however showed real character to get back into the match after losing such an early second half goal. Scorers for Brechin were Moffat with a first half header and a great Paton strike from 25 yards in the second half.
Brechin are at home again on Saturday 12th September when Coupar Angus are the visitors to Victoria Park. Kick off 2.30pm

Montrose Roselea 2 - 0 Brechin Vics
The final game of the DJ Laing cup section did not live up to expectations as Roselea ended up comfortable 2-0 winners. Two first half goals were enough to see off the Vics who never really threatened to get back into the game until midway through the second half. A dissapointed Chris Simpson commented 'this was a great chance for us to progress into a semi final and we didnt show any confidence on the ball, we now have a quality in the squad which i dont think the Vics have had in many years but the players need to start believing in themselves if we want to beat teams like roselea'

Player Transfer Activity
The Management have been busy during the close season with the introdcution of 3 new signings with another couple of players currently training with the club. As is always the case, teams lose players and Vics are no exception with 5 players having left the club for various reasons.
New Signings
Graeme Hart - Graeme is a big powerful striker who has shown up well in the pre-season friendlies and will prove to be an excellent addition. His previous clubs are Dundee North End and Hamilton Accies.
David Easton - David is a young local lad and is also a striker . This is his first season as a junior footballer and already he seems to be settling in well to the team. His previous clubs are Arbroath FC, and was also at Raith Rovers as a youth.
David Fotheringham - David is another Brechin lad and is a product of the Under 19 Youth team. Its a big step up to junior football but he looks as though he has the attributes to achieve success.
Players That Have Left
Steven Cairney - Steven has served the club for the last 8 years and has shown great commitment during this time. Unfortunately family and work commitments have forced Steven to give up and the club although disappointed to lose him fully support his decision.
Callum Valentine - A product of the Under 19's Callum has decided to go back to amatuer football.
Brian Nicoll - Brian is another who came through the Under 19 route and he too has decided to return to amatuer football.
Gary Bruce - Gary has only been here one season with the Vics and has had to give up because of work commitments
Mark Bruce - Mark was only at Vics for one season but did not feature as often as he would have liked. He has rejoined amatuer outfit Morgan Academy FPs.
Vics Management and Committee are grateful for the efforts and commitments of all players who have left and wish them well for the future

League Cup
Brechin Vics 1 ASC 1
Vics had a well earned draw against their Arbroath opponents but had to come form behind to gain a point. ASC took the lead on 20 mins when Vics defence failed to deal with a high ball on the edge of the box and this was followed by a short pass back which allowed the striker the easiest of finishes. Vics dominanted the second half and eventually equalised on 70 mins after a shot from 25 yards by Paul Ross took a slight deflection and ended in the back off the net.

Brechin Vics 4 SS Peter & Paul 2
Vics won their final pre season encounter against Dundee Amatuer side who play in the Midland Amatuer League. This game was hastily arranged when the Vics original opponents Montrose U19's had to pull out.
Vics were two up within 15 mins and both goals were scored by new striker Graeme Hart. His first goal came via the penalty spot when he coolly dispatched his kick past the diving keeper after the referee had awarded the spot kick after Metelski had his jersey pulled in the penalty box. The second came from a free kick from 20 yards as he hammered the ball low into the corner of the net giving the keeper no chance.
Vics continued to dominate the opening exchanges and it was no surprise when they extended their lead. This time a through ball found Easton who drove forward unchallenged before placing the ball passed the keeper from 12 yards.
The second half saw the opposition pose some problems for Vics and they pulled a goal back midway through the half from a corner kick. Vics responded immediately and once again Easton scored shooting high into the roof of the net from 10 yards. SS Peter & Paul got a further goal from the penalty spot to complete the scoring.
Winning is a good habit to get into and with the chances created Vics should have won by a bigger margin. The opposition were strong opponents and gave Vics a physical challenge that they hadn't encountered in their previous games.
League Cup action starts on Saturday 8th August for Vics with a home game against Arbroath Sporting Club. Kick off 2.30pm

Brechin Vics 2 Johnshaven 1
Vics came out on top in their latest friendly match. Vics were in control in the first 45 minutes and should have led by more than the solitary goal which was scored by Easton. The goal came after a neat passing move involving Skelly and Paton and when they sent Eaton in the clear down the left his cut back allowed Easton to side foot home from 8 yards. This was no more than Vics deserved at this point. Hart was next to try his luck but after good play his shot slid past the upright with the keeper beaten.
The second half produced the usual change of personnel and this resulted in Vics play becoming a bit scrappy as the substitutes took time to settle. The half was much more even with Johnshaven asking questions of the Vics defence. It was Vics however who scored the next goal and it was Hart who scored from the penalty spot after being tripped in the box. Easton was next to have an attempt but his shot from 20 yards was tipped over the bar by the keeper. With 10 mins remaining Johnshaven got a goal that they probably deserved. Vics failed to clear their lines and when the ball broke to the striker he hammered the ball into the net from 10 yards.
Again this game was a worthwhile exercise and while not at their best Vics did enough to earn a victory. it also allowed the managment the opportunity to change team selection and give some players much needed playing time.
Vics season begins in earnest on 8th August when they at home to Arbroath Sporting Club in the League Cup section match. This game has a 2.30pm kick off

Jeanfield Swifts 1 Brechin Vics 0
Vics travelled to Perth on Saturday in what was their 3rd and hardest pre season game. Vics were under considerable pressure early on but restricted Jeanfield to long range efforts. The closest Jeanfield came was a cross come shot which looped over Robbie and came back of the crossbar and was cleared to safety. Vics best effort came from Paton when he beat his marker with a bit of trickery but his shot from 18 yards went wide of the target. The second half was quite evenly matched but Jeanfield looked the more dangerous in attack. Jeanfield did take the lead on 75 mins when they scored with a header from a corner. Vics responded immediately when Barclay was sent through the middle. A combination of the keeper and defender upended Barclay and as the ball broke Fenwick slid the ball into the empty net. Unfortuately for Vics the referree has already blown for the free kick and the goal was disallowed.
This was a much harder test for Vics and they acquitted themselves well. Although they didn't create too much in attack, as a team they defended very well with keeper Robbie only having to make 2 saves of any note. The run out was another step in match fitness preperations as the Vics gear up for the start of the season on 8th August

Brechin Vics 4 Bervie Caley 1
Vics won quite convincingly in the end against Aberdeen Amatuer side Bervie Caley. The visitors showed early on that they would be not be easy opponents and had their fair share of possession during the half without posing to many problems for keeper Robbie, who's defence kept any efforts to long range. It wasn't until the second half that the goals were scored and it was Bervie who took the lead on 60 mins. It was a bad goal to lose from the Vics point of view when they failed to deal with a cross from the right and the ball ended up rebounding off vics midfielder Neil Hattersly and in to the net. Vics were quickly on level terms when Simpson volleyed home from 12 yards. Vics took the lead some 10 mins later when Moffat shot home from 6 yards. Vics were now dominant at this stage and it was manager Simpson who again got on the score sheet scoring a further two goals in the last 10 mins to complete his hat-trick. His second goal came after good play down the left which saw Simpson cut in before placing the ball in the corner of the net from 14 yards. His third goal came after he was found free 6 yards from goal and slotted the ball home with ease.
This was another worth while exercise with the whole squad getting a run out. It was good to see the Vics hard training schedule paying dividends as they finished by far the stronger team. Credit to Bervie who for spells matched the Vics and gave them some uncomfortable moments.
Saturday 25th July sees Vics away to Jeanfield Swifts kick off 2pm. The Vics have two further home friendlies when Johnshaven Amatuers visit on Wednesday 29th July, kick of at 7pm and the final pre-season friendly is on Saturday 1st August against Montrose U19's kick off 2.00pm.

Brechin Vics 2 Banchory St Ternans 2
Vics had a creditable draw against their Aberdeen Super League opponents but in reallity could have been a victory. In an evenly contested first half with both sides having periods of domination it was Vics who took the lead on 25 mins when Hart scored from close range after a great Hattersley run and cross from the right. Vics increased their lead 15 mins into the second half with a terrific goal. Banchory cleared a Vics corner only to the feet of Skelly who from 30 yards crashed an unstoppable shot high passed the keeper. Banchory had more of the game in the last 25 mins as Vics made numerous changes in an attempt and give players crucial match practice. Banchory however grabbed two goals in the last 10 mins for probably a deserved share of the spoils in what was a very worthwhile exercise for both side.
Vics have another pre-season friendly when they play Bervie Caly at Victoria Park on Wednesday 22nd July kick off 7.15. On Saturday 25th July 2009 they are away to Jeanfield Swifts of Perth with a 2pm kick off
