Redwood Leisure Cup - Preliminary Round

Brechin Vics 2 - 2 ASC  (Brechin Won 4-3 on penalties)

Brechin were back in action after 3 weeks off due to the severe weather conditions.  However, the game was in serious doubt right up until kick off due to the heavy rain.  The Vics competed very well in the first half and created the better of the chances and were unlucky not to be leading at the interval.  The 2nd Half was played at an intence pace and and was a classic cup match with plenty of action at both ends of the pitch.  The Vics came from behind twice during the 2nd half with both goals coming from Steven Cairney.  The game finished 2-2 and penalties were needed to decide which team would progress.  The scorers for the Vics were S.Cairney, D.Skelly, C.Valentine and C.Simpson netting the decisive penalty.  Manager Chris Simpson commented 'the lads worked hard and were excellent today and showed great character to come from behind twice, this is the confidance boost we have been needing and will benefit us over the forthcoming weeks'.

Brechin Vics 1- 4 Couper Angus

On a snowy pitch the Vics lost to a well organised Couper Angus outfit. Down 1-0 at half time, the vics may have felt hard done by as once again, we were punished for not taking guilt edged chances. An injury to Blair Mudie just after half time was the turning point in the game as Couper scored 3 times before the vics defense reorganised and adapted to the game. David Skelly scored a consolation goal for the vics. Assistant Manager Alan Millar commented 'the games that we are losing could have gone the other way if we were more composed infront of goal. Chris and i believe in the quality of our squad and im sure if we can keep players fit, our season will turn round and the goals will come'.

Brechin Vics 0-2 Lochee Harp

With goals coming in the first and last minutes of the game, the scoreline certainly flattered the visitors. The Vics moved the ball about well and again created numerous chances that were not converted.  In a similar vain to last week, Brechin can be happy with the performance and were arguably the better side but again a team leave Victoria park with full points.

Brechin Vics 1 - 2 A.S.C.

Arbroath Sporting club left Victoria park with all three points in yesterdays North League encounter. The Vics were punished in the first 10 minutes when a misplaced pass was picked up outside the vics box and Aldershaw finished well. However,Brechin battled back and were awarded a penalty when Skelly was upended in the box. Chris Paton dispatched the penalty to put the sides level. Disaster struck for the Vics when slack marking allowed an Arbroath player to head home. It was one way traffic from this point but Brechin could not put the ball in the net. Manager Chris Simpson said that 'we had chances cleared off the line, we hit the post and missed guilt edge chances. At this level there is little margin for error and we paid the price as ASC took there chances well.

Dyce Athletic 2 - 0 Brechin Vics

Aberdeen superleague outfit Dyce Athletic hosted the Vics in the second round of the scottish cup. In a fairly even first half, neither team could break the deadlock with both teams squandering decent chances. However,it was the home side who took the lead from a goal mouth scramble which looked as if a Dyce player pushed Paul Ross in the back as he attempted to clear. A fine strike from Neish sailed in off the post to put the game beyond Brechin. The Vics would like to thank Dyce for their fine hospitality after the game and wish them the best of luck in the next round.

Downfield 3-0 Brechin Vics

On a blustery and wet day at Downfield, the Vics poor run continued as they slipped to defeat against a well organised Downfield side.  With both sides unable to score in the first half, it was likely the first team to score would go on to win the game.  Vics certainly had the chances to do this, but a mixture of poor finishing and slippy conditions contributed to the defeat. Credit must go to both teams for trying to keep the ball down and play football in horrendous conditions.

Brechin Vics 1- 2 Bankfoot Athletic

In an entertaining game at Victoria park, the vics were knocked out of the G.A. cup. The Bankies took an early lead with their first foray into the vics box, but a Chris Simpson equaliser midway through the first half saw the sides go in at half time level. Brechin came out strongly in the second half and played some excellent football but disaster struck when yet again, the Vics gave away a penalty which was calmy executed by Scott Mcabe.

Tranent Athletic 5 - 1 Brechin Vics

The vics poor run continued with a dissapointing result against Tranent.  Going in to the half 2-1 down, the vics felt they could take something from the game after dominating for long spells. However, a disasterous 8 minute spell saw 3 goals fly in which ended any thoughts of a comeback. Assistant Manager Alan Millar commented that 'this was a strange result as we were extremely comfortable for the first 30 minutes, but didnt convert any of our chances.  I dont feel the scoreline reflected the game but we are losing goals too easily at the moment'.

Broughty Athletic 5 - 0 Brechin Vics

Brechin lost their second consecutive game in as many weeks.  Brechin went into this game full of confidence and were hoping to bounce back after last weeks unlucky defeat.  it was a disappointing first half performance by the vics which seen them going in at half time 4-0 down.  Brechin battled hard in the second half and played some good football, but the damage was already done in the first half.  Manager Chris Simpson said that "this was a very disappointing result and i hope the players will learn from this.  We had a game plan which the players did not stick to in the first half and broughty exploited us.  We applied ourselfs correctly in the second half and we were very postive in our play, but the damage was done already".

Montrose Roselea 2 - 0 Brechin Vics

Brechin lost their unbeaten run today in a hard fought encounter against local rivals Montrose RoseleaWith both teams squandering chances in the first half, it was a matter of time before somebody broke the deadlock. Unfortunately for the Vics, 5 minutes into the Second half Roselea gained the advantage by scoring from the penalty spot. Montrose added a second shortly after by heading home from a quickly taken corner. More misery was to follow for the vics when Ian Gauld, Blair Mudie and Scott Fenwick all had to be taken off with injuries which may rule them out for next weeks trip to Whitton park.  Manager Chris Simpson said that "the players should be pleased with their overall performance, as we worked extremely hard throughout the game and were the better team in the first half.  Unfortunately our inability to keep the ball in the second half cost us."

Forfar Albion 1 Brechin Vics 2

The vics came from behind to earn a well deserved victory in the final league cup game.  After wasting numerous chances and dominating for long spells of the game, it was Albion who took the lead in a rare foray into the vics box. However, vics pressure finally paid off as Trialist David Skelly connected with Lee Hoods Cross for a well taken goal. Rory Crighton then reacted to a mix up in Albions defense to score the winner for Brechin.  Assistant Manager Alan Millar said 'he was pleased with the performance and the number of chances we created thoughout the 90 minutes. Brechin Vics 0 Roselea 5

The vics slipped to a dissapointing defeat to roselea at Victoria Park. Down 2-0 at half time, the vics still felt they were in the game but a controversial penalty and a deflected free kick put the game out of reach. Assistant Manager Alan Millar said that 'he was dissapointed how easily Roselea scored from set pieces and it is something we will have to work on. However, we did play some excellent football but lacked a creative edge in the final third of the pitch. This was mainly down to the fact we had no strikers in the squad, and were forced to play with a lone striker.'

The game was played at a fast pace with the final result flattering our opponents as their was nothing between the two sides. Manager Chris Simpson commented that "yes i am disappointed with the result but i have to look at the positives, which are the defence played really well and limited ASC chances.  We also looked much fitter than our oppenents over the 90mins even when we had a player sent off."  Hopefully the players won't let this result affect them for next weekend.
